INFO-ATARI16 Digest Tue, 14 Nov 89 Volume 89 : Issue 646 Today's Topics: Allen,Ken.. Asst. Dribble.... desktop.inf Quick st 1.6 The Atari STE TOS 1.4 release notes arrived ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 14 Nov 89 02:00 EST From: V053QHYX@ubvmsc.cc.buffalo.edu Subject: Allen,Ken.. Its amazing that a company with such good employees or should I say dedicated employees can be run by such idiots.. I've worked with John a few times, and I remember Working hand in hand with Neil Hariss..I was a consultant for Ataris advertising agency in NY(Messner Vetere Berger and Carey) we produced 4 ATARI commercials that were all very good...BUt dur due to upper managements lack of who knows what..they werent aired..it was amazing..Atari wouldn't give us the equipment to film the commercial! Neil hadto send me his harddrive so I could use it in the commercial!! And talk about Cheap?!!!The budget was non existant..Instead of having an Atari rep work with the add agency (and yes they had a NY sales rep at the time by now he's probably long gone) they hired me.I was 16 and a users group president.. I was asked questions like:Why is the ST better then the mac.. why cant it do this..can it do this..can you make it do this..etc.. it was probably the worst experience in my life!!Even before I did the commercials I did some work for atari at 47th st photo in NY where atari did a major press release for the 1040's...Was I paid for that?No.. of course not..Dont get me wrong I love the ST but the management of the company is horrible...Probably the best thing atari could do is rename the company and try to sell its computers under a different name! Due to lack of sufficient support I'm in the market for an OS2 machine..and IBMS student discounts place a model 55sx at about 1600 for everything I could dream of.. why should I stick with atari????Give me one reason?? Jeremty whoops..Jeremy Berger a really PISSSED Atari owner... P.S. However after programming a Mac..Why would anyone want a MAC??? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Nov 89 22:55:36 MST From: ehsnsr@jupiter.nmt.edu (Eric Hobbs) Subject: Asst. Dribble.... Yup, it's me again! I have one comment and a few questions: [COMMENT:] Has anyone seen the <<<>>> ad on page 14 of the November(?) issue of _Scientific_American_ for the Portfolio? Two pages even!! Looks nice.... Too bad the ST isn't getting those kinds of advertisements.... :-) ~~~~~~~~~Believe it or not, that was not a bash. :-) [Question 1:] Is it just my monitor or do all SM124's start to dim out when there is very little 'white' on the screen? [Question 2:] Where are all these old "29 Oct 89" articles coming from? OOPS![Another Comment:] Is there any particular reason why the person known as "BobR" had to post a s--tload of articles on his dissatisfaction with Atari. Why not append them all to one posting so I could 'n' them. Let's face it, I'm sick of hearing about the faults of Atari. Some people are giving me the impression that Sam and Jack Tramiel bought Atari for tens of millions of dollars just so they could lose money on it and drive the corporation into the ground. Somehow that doesn't strike me as reasonable. Surely they realize that they better get their acts together, or they will lose the U.S. market. They know it. We as users know it. So please! Enough with the Atari-bashing. It does no one any good. Besides, this is a news group for Atari enthusiasts, not bashers. If you want to bash, start a comp.sys.atari.st.bash. How about this one: comp.sys.atari.st.bitch.and.complain.I.hate.atari........... [This entire comment is MY OPINION. Please! No flames. They do just about as much good as Atari bashing!] XXXXTRa Comment: How's this for an idea: Now that East Germany has opened its doors, this may be a great opportunity to sell more ST's!!!!! :-) :-) Thanks! Soon we'll all see if it's true. I have ordered one! (yes, I *know*. You're not interested. But please, do not flame me! You might be interested in hearing about it's capabilities, or the lack of them!) Do anyone have the specifications for the new chips? The I/O-adresses and so on. Any information would be of great help. Maybe Atari Corp? :-) What do you say, eh? I've heard rumours about the STE having 8 stereo 8-bit PCM sound channels. But now a friend of mine, who has access to one of the developement machines says it only has ONE stereo 8-bit channel! And that it's impossible to change the frequency on that channel like on the Amiga. It is according to him only possible to set fixed freqencies like the crystal /1, /2, /4, /8 etc. Is this correct? I've been promised to get the STE on Thursday or Friday. We'll see then. Nice meaty stuff, with >a fair amount of example code. Came with a 3-ring binder. A much-appreciated >early Christmas present. > Steve J. i guess santa claus only lives in the states! we here at electrohome finally received our TOS 1.4 upgrade, with the rainbow tos upgrade notes. no 3 ring binder. in fact, the notes were bloody PHOTOCOPIES, which had poor contrast, and were shrunk down 60% to boot!!!!!!!!!! like, get your buns in gear atari. we didn't pay ?100 dollars for stupid photocopies which are hardly readable in the first place. the whole developer kit was a complete shambles (it came totally messed up inside an atari 800XL box!!!!!!!), with no binders, and no order to the notes. plus, most of the stuff was vintage 1985/86 notes, with no info on tos 1.2 changes, etc. in all, the developer stuff is VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. i'm glad the company paid for the travesty, not myself. its too bad, because everyone here at electrohome is very impressed with the power and capabilities of the ST, but not with the support atari gives it. also, it would be very nice (hint hint) if Ken B. and co. would mail out to all registered owners an official document concerning the extended argument passing scheme posted to the net a couple of days ago. i've taken that note and formatted into a somewhat professional looking document, but that still doesn't get atari off the hook for not releasing official stuff to its developers. and where are these newsletters??? anyways, back to programming the ST. i'd never leave this environment for anything (ok, maybe a Sun or Apollo), especially the MSDOS/OS2 and Apple world. cheers. -- =====Ignac A.
